Master's Seminar (QST)

The Master's seminar is part of the research phase, in which students work on a current problem in the field of quantum science and technology (QST). Possible topics are based on the research focus of the departments, schools or groups participating in the Quantum Science and Technology Master's program. Topics include experimental and theoretical work on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum simulation, quantum sensing, quantum metrology, and quantum materials.

This module offers students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the subject area in which they plan to write their Master's thesis. It serves to deepen their knowledge and gain an overview of the state of research in their chosen area of specialization.

After completing the module the student is able to:

1. Understand the current state of scientific research in a limited field of quantum science and technology.

2. Evaluate the status of the topic of the intended Master's thesis in the chosen field of research.

3. Analyze various different methods from the chosen subject area and assess their possibilities (advantages and disadvantages).

Students spend a large part of the Master's seminar studying literature independently, especially current scientific publications. Based on literature that is specified and made available by their supervisor, they also conduct their own literature research. At the same time, the students are involved in a research group, which gives them the opportunity to discuss unclear issues directly with their supervisor or other members of their research group.

In the weekly group seminar of their research group students present their current work and discuss it within the research group.

Supplementary literature, scientific publications, presentations and discussions.

Current literature on the specific topic – relevant information is provided by the supervisor.

Students give an oral presentation followed by a discussion (30 minutes in total), demonstrating their ability to understand and classify the current state of research in the chosen subject area. The exam is taken as a pass/fail credit requirement.
